Building a professional ID in the 21st century

Description
We live in an era of individual “personalization and customization”. The read and write web has helped develop a new concept - “do it yourself and your own way” . The phenomenon has had implications in our society at different levels - from the way people learn to the new, emerging jobs and employment needs. The worksop aims at providing awareness of the way the web can empower the individual not only to learn, but also to present what, how and with whom he/she learns.
Objectives
By the end of the 6 week workshop participants will have:
- discussed about current issues concerning the use of eportfolios in lifelong learning;
- analized their PLE;
- engaged hands-on with several relevant web 2.0 tools to develop a reputable presence online;
- experienced learning in community and collaboration in online environments;
- created personal(ized) spaces where they can represent their activity, and their professional development and engagement.
Target audience
The workshop is aimed at teachers and trainers who already have some initial experience with web 2.0 environments and online communities and who would like to explore the experience in depth and in a collaborative way.

Weekly content
Week 1
Getting acquainted
During the first week of the workshop, participants will
- Join the communal space (ning)
- Edit their profile.
- Befriend other members of the workshop
- Leave comments on other participants' personal walls (inside their individual Ning spaces "My Page")
- Answer a survey in their expectations about this workshop
- Discuss "how do you use media now" (warming up to bigger and deeper discussions)
Week 2
Researching
During week 2, participants will
- Produce a mind-map reflecting his/her personal learning environment
- Share their mind map with the group.
Special: Attend Online synchronous session with guest speaker Helen Keegan on Digital Me (Time/date to be confirmed)
Week 3
Planning
In week 3, participants will
- Attend live session(s) by moderators / watch the recording(s)
- Explore relevant tools and applications for their Personal Learning Spaces
- Analize the usefulness of the tool in their practice context
- Engage in discussions
- Reflect about their findings in their blogs
Week 4
Creating
In week 4, participants will
- Continue exploring the tools they considered more effective to represent and present their learning.
- Share their creation process in the collective / personal discussion spaces
- Engage in discussion prompt by the moderators/participants
Special : Online synchronous session with guest speaker Graham Attwell on Social Software, Personal Learning Environments and the future of Education (time/date tbc)
Week 5
Presenting
During this week participants will:
- Continue to develop their online presence
- Share the outcomes of their endeavor with the rest of the group.
- Present their projects to the rest of the group in live sessions
Week 6
Reflecting
During the final week participants will
- Engage in a joint reflection about the workshop in the discussion forum: 'what was achieved and what is still left to conquer'.
- Post small individual reflection about their 6 week learning path in their blogs
- Answer our final survey
- Join the Virtual Graduation party.

I teach English including technical English. I do educational projects locally, regionally and on a European level usually inthe area of e-learning, teacher training and intercultural understanding. In my spare time I co-host the Absolutely Intercultural podcast and run a website for learners of French. Before I came to Denmark 15 years ago I was a teacher of business subjects in various Further Education colleges in the UK. I don't believe that you can promote autonomous learning in your students unless you are an autonomous learner yourself. My current project is the VITAE project which promotes the integration of ICT in vocational education through mentor support.

EFL teacher and learning technologies officer (and apprentice-researcher in her spare time! :-) ) Used to involve students in ICT activities. Currently she is working at the University of Salford,helping academic staff in efficient use of edu-technology. She believes in the power of human interaction mediated by Social Media as an efficient way to take part in collaborative learning opportunities, which will reinforce their professional ID.

I live on Vancouver Island, on Canada's west coast. I have a Master of Education degree in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. I completed requirements for this degree entirely online, and "attending classes" from all over North America while employed as Training Developer for SMART Technologies Inc. of Calgary, Alberta. While at SMART, I became very interested in the power of the web to connect, and the capacity of the tools--especially software--to empower and enable users. I began graduate school online in the fall of 2001, and began blogging in January, 2002 and have been learning more about web-based learning ever since.

Nellie Deutsch

My name is Nellie Deutsch. I have been teaching English to speakers of Hebrew in both high school and university settings for many years. I am a PAIRS educator and Reiki practitioner. I practice mindfulness meditation and the Alexander Technique. I am currently enjoying every minute of my doctoral studies in educational leadership specializing in curriculum and instruction at the University of Phoenix online. I am researching blended learning and instructor use of technology in higher education. I am passionate about learning, writing, and teaching. I am passionate about online learning and instruction, but find face to face workshops just as exciting.
